About Me

Elsa Bonstein is a child of Finnish immigrants, Arvo and Elvi Latomaa.  She grew up on a small farm in rural Maryland, five miles from the nearest town.  The family’s circle of friends included Swedes, Danes and other Finns who also owned small farms in and around Cecil County.  She is fluent in Finnish and has visited her parent’s home country several times.  Her earliest memory is sitting in her father’s lap while he read “The Secret Garden” to her in Finnish.

An only child with an addiction to reading, she always wanted to be a writer and to touch others as she had been touched by her favorite authors.  She attended the University of Syracuse, graduating with a BA in Sociology and Journalism.

Married and living in New Jersey with four daughters, Elsa began freelancing for various newspapers and magazines, including the Asbury Park Press, New Jersey Living, and others.  She wrote business articles, restaurant reviews, op-ed pieces, feature stories, and humor.  In addition, she published poetry and children’s stories in various magazines.

With her children grown, she and her husband Gene moved to the Carolina Coast where she worked for the Brunswick Beacon for 14 years, writing features stories and a popular golf column called Golf Gab.  She won several awards with her column from the Golf Course Superintendents Association, the Carolinas Golf Association, and others.  She shadowed a dying man for the last six weeks of his life and wrote a series about him for the Beacon called  “The Life and Death of Bob Rohde”.  It won an award from Landmark Publications.

In 2014 Elsa published her first book, FIND EDSELL! It won the Writer’s Digest Mark of Quality and had good reviews.  Her second book, FOOTES CREEK (a golf course murder mystery) is available on this website through Inkitt.

She is now a full-time novelist and recently finished her third novel, LOSING IT, a cross-country thriller. Elsa is actively looking for an agent and/or publisher.  Read about her research in her blog, The Adventure of Writing a Book, on this website.
